Just got back from Monumentour. It was fuckin’ as awesome as we all expect.

Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. […] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know.

Jeremy Knowles, discussing the complete lack of recognition Cecilia Payne gets, even today, for her revolutionary discovery. (via alliterate)

Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge.

Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because she was a woman, so she said fuck that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard.

Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called “the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy.”

Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne—after telling her not to publish).

Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work.

Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science.

Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her.

"The first Disney Movie to tell girls they can fight too is Frozen!"

"Frozen is the first Disney Movie where the girl didn’t need a man to save her!! <3 "

"Frozen is the first Disney movie about loving sisters!"

"Frozen is the first Disney movie to question why someone would get married after knowing them for only a day."

"Frozen is the first film to have a blonde male lead who doesn’t fit the cookie cutter mold

I get what this post is about but they all keep saying that Frozen has had the best music in a Disney film since The Lion King and I dunno. I like ALL the songs in Lion King.

Okay so Game of Thrones, you were amazing tonight. Easily my favourite episode. I liked this one even better than the Blackwater.

And I suppose that’s because it felt like a goddamn epic in the most wonderful of ways.

Like you know how you felt watching The Battle of Hogwarts? Or watching the Avengers? Where everyone is everywhere and you’re biting your nails going “shitshitshit”?

That was this episode.

It seriously felt like a movie. I hope it wins something.

(p.s. So happy that it was that little boy who killed her. I totally called it.)

no fucks were given tonight

this is mesmerizing.

non equine blogs have reblogged this? Because that’s really cool because horses and stuff.

Alright this is absolutely fantastic
But can we talk about how either 51,231 people have seen someone die or a bunch of people just reblogged a loop gif of a hurdle

Hello I am from tumblr and I understood that reference that you have just made

Aww yeah. I went through all of the filters and the mirror just looks like that because it’s that sunny out. And not even a false misleading sunny, because it is hot as balls out right now.

Margay is a mammal that belongs to family of cats. They are shy and spend most of the time above trees and prefers life in evergreen forests.
Unlike other cats, Margay is able to move down the tree, with its head going before feet (like squirrels). This is possible because it has very flexible ankles that can rotate up to 180 degrees and a long tail that provides complete balance, making them one of the best 4-legged tree climbers in the world.
It is estimated that more than 14,000 margays are killed each year for its fur.

I want 10 😻
